Cosmos Hub validators intercept 1.23 million stolen ATOM after Sept. 22 attack

Refunds of the 1.23 million ATOM held by Hub custody signers are contingent on a separate governance proposal passing, per Cosmos Labs' account.

CryptoSlate reports that validators on the Cosmos Hub secured 1,227,121.37 ATOM after an attacker moved roughly 1.73 million stolen ATOM from Neutron to the Cosmos Hub during a Sept. 22 governance attack.

The outlet says that while the emergency patch stopped further outflows from the Hub side, six signers holding the recovered balance will release funds to affected users and protocols only after a separate Hub governance proposal passes, a condition described in a Sept. 25 account from Cosmos Labs.

According to CryptoSlate, a Hub balance query showed the recovery address holding 1,227,121.374688 ATOM at 15:40 UTC on Sept. 26, and Cosmos Labs said the Neutron response team was still preparing evidence and a distribution plan to support a return.

The attack, per the Hub maintainers, began on Neutron when a governance proposal gave the attacker administrative control over contracts used by Astroport and other protocols, and the Hub was not exploited even though it became the destination for part of the stolen balance.
