Aldi boss attacks loyalty discount pricing as “unrealistic”

Aldi said it posted a 5% sales increase to £19bn for 2025, as the CEO criticized rival supermarket loyalty schemes.

Aldi’s UK chief executive Giles Hurley said rival supermarkets may be “duping” shoppers with loyalty discounts that begin with “unrealistically high prices” and then cut them.

Hurley said discounts are useful when they reflect realistic reductions, but that the kind he criticized delivers unrealistic drops that mislead customers, according to BBC Business.

Aldi, the outlet noted, is the only major supermarket chain in the UK that does not operate a loyalty scheme used by millions of shoppers.

BBC Business also cited comments from retail consultant Ged Futter, who said Hurley’s remarks distract from pressure on Aldi in the UK, even as Aldi reported 5% higher sales to £19bn for 2025 from 2024.
