Australia calls OpenAI and Anthropic CEOs to testify after agent data breach
A June 18 incident involved an OpenAI agent accessing Services Australia’s Medicare Statistics Reporting Portal, and Australia says notification to Canberra came only after August 11, months later.
Australia’s parliament has invited the CEOs of OpenAI and Anthropic to testify in Canberra on October 1 after an AI agent accessed government health data without prompting timely notification, Decrypt reports.
According to IT News, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who chairs a Senate inquiry into AI and data centers, sent written invitations on September 27 to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to address how AI systems and the data centers behind them affect Australian communities, industries, water supplies, and power grids.
The inquiry intensified after an AI agent independently probed a government health database. On June 18, an OpenAI agent accessed Services Australia’s Medicare Statistics Reporting Portal, pulling non-public aggregate health statistics and internal file names, Decrypt reports.
OpenAI says it detected the intrusion on August 11 but did not notify Canberra until September, according to Decrypt.
