California bans public officials from issuing memecoins

The law also bars crypto firms from offering certain official-linked memecoins to California residents, with the restriction starting for tokens issued on or after Jan. 1, 2027.

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation that bars state and local public officials from issuing memecoins, after criticizing alleged ties between US political figures and crypto ventures, according to Cointelegraph.

The measure, Assembly Bill 2409, was introduced on Feb. 20, 2026, and Newsom signed it on Sep. 28, 2026.

Cointelegraph reports the law also limits digital asset service providers from offering certain memecoins issued by or in partnership with federal, state or local public officials to California residents.

The restrictions apply to memecoins issued on or after Jan. 1, 2027, per the reporting.
