Yen worry returns after US-Iran tensions lift risk sentiment
Japan’s leadership reiterated concerns about yen weakness after Trump raised the issue in a recent summit, while India’s NIFTY 50 slid 1.25% to 22,855.
Asian stocks mostly traded lower on Monday, pressured by rising oil prices and higher US Treasury yields, while traders doubted that the US and Iran would quickly reach a ceasefire agreement, FXStreet wrote.
The risk-off tone extended to India, where the NIFTY 50 fell 1.25% to 22,855 and the BSE Sensex dropped more than 1.30% to 72,945 amid escalating US-Iran tensions, FXStreet reported.
FXStreet also said volatility could stay elevated as traders look ahead to month-end expiry of Nifty and Bank Nifty contracts on Tuesday.
In Japan, Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae said Trump expressed concern about the yen’s weakness in their latest summit, and Finance Minister Katayama Satsuki reconfirmed that the yen’s undervaluation is problematic after speaking with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, according to FXStreet.
