BBC chief says AI Doctor Who episode would not replace humans
The BBC put the sci-fi series out to tender after a $220 million Disney deal ended.
BBC Director-General Matt Brittin told an audience at the Royal Television Society conference that AI-generated creativity would not replace human creators, arguing that “not all the creativity is bad.” Decrypt reports Brittin added that “everyone’s a creator” and said he would consider allowing a BBC program to be made and presented with AI, within guardrails.
The remarks come after the BBC put Doctor Who out to tender following a hiatus after the conclusion of a $220 million deal with Disney. Decrypt also notes Brittin did not provide further details about the specific episode, including whether the BBC created it or received it from an outside party.
Decrypt further reports that the BBC declined to comment, and that the broadcaster previously tried to combine Doctor Who and AI before facing audience backlash. In 2024, the BBC said it began using generative AI to create marketing materials for flagship shows, starting with Doctor Who, then abandoned those plans after receiving criticism, according to the text provided.
