Burnham plans to end state pension earnings link from 2030

The policy would keep annual state pension rises tied to inflation or 2.5%, but would remove the automatic link to average earnings from 2030.

Andy Burnham, speaking at his first Labour Party conference as prime minister, said he intends to end the existing state pension “triple lock” from 2030 as part of a broader plan to help fund a new national care service.

According to the BBC, his approach would still increase the state pension each year by at least inflation or 2.5%, but would remove the automatic annual link with average earnings, a move framed as generating “significant savings”.

Burnham also said he wants to pave the way for greater public control over housing, water and energy services, and he indicated the possibility of reforming the UK’s electoral system, the outlet reported.

The BBC said the announcement came after days of questions over how to fund social care reforms in England.
