Coinbase wins CFTC approval to launch US derivatives clearinghouse
The CFTC approval took effect Monday, letting Coinbase Clearing clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps, but not leveraged products.
Coinbase received approval from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission to launch Coinbase Clearing LLC, a US-based derivatives clearing organization, Cointelegraph reports. The CFTC registration became effective Monday, completing what Coinbase described as its end-to-end derivatives infrastructure.
According to Cointelegraph, the approval allows Coinbase Clearing to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps. The registration does not permit the clearinghouse to clear leveraged products.
Cointelegraph adds that Coinbase’s move follows Kraken’s parent acquiring Bitnomial and its CFTC-regulated exchange, clearinghouse, and brokerage in May, after which Coinbase looked to bring similar derivatives infrastructure in-house.
