Many S&P 500 stocks are in bear-market territory, despite a near-record index
While the S&P 500 traded within 2.0% of its record closing high, the broader snapshot shows far more individual stocks have dropped enough to qualify as bear markets.
MarketWatch said the S&P 500 was trading within 2 percentage points of its record closing high on Tuesday, even as a deeper look points to weaker conditions under the surface.
According to MarketWatch, the share of individual stocks in bear-market territory is high, suggesting the index’s relative strength does not reflect the performance of many components.
