US consumer confidence drops to 81.9 in September

The Conference Board said its survey shows labor views deteriorated, with the share saying jobs were plentiful falling from 24.5% to 23.6%.

US consumer confidence fell sharply in September, according to The Conference Board, with its Consumer Confidence Index dropping from 88.6 to 81.9.

The decline was broad-based, as the Present Situation Index fell from 117.2 to 109.3 and the Expectations Index slid from 69.5 to 63.6, marking a third consecutive monthly decline.

Assessments of current business conditions turned negative on balance for the first time since September 2024, and consumers grew more pessimistic about both business conditions and household income prospects over the next six months, Action Forex reported.

Labor views weakened notably in the survey, with consumers reporting fewer plentiful jobs and more jobs being hard to get, while expectations for jobs and income also deteriorated.
