Dow holds its September floor as consumer confidence weakens
The Conference Board index fell to 81.9, and households also flagged weaker business conditions and the job market over the next six months.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average retested its September floor near 51,100 after US consumer confidence deteriorated, but the level held for a third time, according to FXStreet.
The Conference Board’s index slid to 81.9 from 88.6 versus a forecast near 89, and households said they expect business conditions and the job market to weaken over the next six months, with their view of current business conditions turning negative for the first time since September 2024.
Job openings also came in light, at 7.08 million in August versus a 7.23 million forecast, while the survey closed on September 23 before Treasury yields climbed again.
FXStreet said the Dow is down about 3.5% in September with one session left, while the S&P 500 is down 0.2% over the same stretch, as the 10-year Treasury yield neared 5.26% and the 30-year hit its highest since 2002.
