Greggs plans to close four factories and cut 740 jobs over 2.5 years

The restructuring is expected to cost about £60 million, with some manufacturing processes relocating while retail shops remain unaffected.

British high street bakery chain Greggs announced it will shut four manufacturing factories and cut 740 jobs as part of a restructuring over the next two and a half years, saying the changes are needed to keep pace with changing customer expectations, according to BBC Business.

The company plans to close sites at North Lakes near Penrith, Cumbria; Pettigrews in Kelso, Scotland; Seaham in County Durham; and Enfield, Greater London, while distribution operations would continue to run from Enfield.

Greggs also said the proposals would affect manufacturing at its Treforest site in Wales, though the location will continue as a distribution centre. The firm added that retail shops would not be affected, with parts of manufacturing relocating, product ranges at Clydesmill Glasgow and Manchester reduced, and tinned bread production at Gosforth stopped.

BBC Business reports that Chief executive Roisin Currie said no final decisions have been made yet, with staff consultations expected to start soon, and the shake-up is expected to cost about £60 million.
