Hong Kong faces higher demand for student housing, urges more private supply
Hong Kong’s Housing Bureau forecasts annual demand for non-local student housing at 2,310 flats over the next decade, 45.0% higher than last year’s estimate.
Hong Kong authorities are being urged to boost the share of private housing in selected districts and to coordinate more closely with developers to expand accommodation for non-local students, as demand projections rise.
According to a Long-Term Housing Strategy progress report released Monday, the government forecasts average annual demand for non-local student housing at 2,310 flats over the next decade, up 45.0% from last year’s estimate.
The Housing Bureau linked the projection to an average annual increase of about 7,100 student visas from 2016-17 through 2025-26, and said roughly 65.0% of those students did not live in university-provided halls or hostels.
The report’s update also comes as five public universities in Hong Kong rank among the top 100 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, according to SCMP Economy.
