Petrobras tests Cardano to prevent double-counting SAF credits

Cardano is being used to represent sustainable aviation fuel attributes as standardized tokens that can be created, transferred, checked, and retired to block repeat claims.

Petrobras, Brazil’s state-controlled energy company, is testing Cardano to track sustainable aviation fuel benefits and prevent double-counting of those environmental attributes, the Cardano Foundation said. The effort includes applications for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and Petrobras’ Diesel R, delivered as part of an ongoing research and development collaboration announced Sept. 30.

The project is built around a book-and-claim model designed to address situations where the buyer of a fuel’s environmental benefit is different from the buyer or user of the fuel itself. According to the Foundation, the system lets airlines, companies, or passengers receive the environmental benefit even when SAF is produced or used elsewhere.

In the case study described by the Foundation, SAF environmental attributes are represented as standardized CS-SAF tokens on Cardano. Those tokens can be created, transferred, checked, and retired, and retirement is intended to prevent the same attribute from being claimed again while maintaining a digital record that traces allocation back to the original fuel certificate.

The Cardano Foundation framed the setup as analogous to preventing double spending in digital assets, applying that idea to environmental claims. Petrobras developed the SAF platform with PUC-Rio University’s Ledger Labs and the Cardano Foundation.
