Crypto losses near $2.7 billion in 2026 after September spike
North Korea-linked thefts account for more than $1.0 billion of the year’s total, while CertiK says September became the costliest month at about $766.5 million.
Crypto firms and users have lost nearly $2.7 billion to security incidents in 2026, according to CryptoSlate, with North Korea-linked thefts exceeding $1 billion.
Blockchain security firm CertiK recorded 658 incidents through September, and it said about $420.4 million of stolen assets were frozen or returned. After adjustments, that leaves roughly $2.26 billion in losses, or an average of $4.1 million per incident.
CryptoSlate reports that September drove a major jump in losses, totaling about $766.5 million and surpassing April’s $651.3 million. The month also included Bitget’s $387.5 million breach and a $318.7 million Liquid Network incident, which together accounted for more than $700 million of the damage.
The surge has also concentrated the year’s losses among a smaller number of large attacks, CryptoSlate notes, citing Elliptic’s view that suspected North Korean hackers have taken more than $1 billion in crypto this year. September pushed Bitget and Liquid Network to the top of CertiK’s 2026 incident ranking, widening the gap versus smaller breaches.
