Newsom signs bills to limit CEQA challenges for Midway Rising
The measures target Midway Rising, a $3.9 billion San Diego redevelopment planned for about 4,000 homes.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bills 344 and 958 to reduce how often opponents can use California Environmental Quality Act litigation to delay housing projects, HousingWire reports.
The bills are aimed at the Midway Rising redevelopment at San Diego’s Sports Arena site, a $3.9 billion project planned for about 4,000 homes. SB 344 is designed to restrict further CEQA challenges to the project’s environmental review after certain steps in the process are completed.
HousingWire also reports that SB 958 caps building height as part of the rules for qualifying infill projects, limiting how added height is treated under the new framework. Newsom signed the bills Tuesday as part of a broader housing package meant to speed construction in a state that has struggled to build enough affordable homes.
