Zoo Atlanta welcomes two giant pandas after Xi’s US visit

The pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang arrive after Zoo Atlanta’s prior 25-year partnership with China ended in 2024, continuing “panda diplomacy” that Xi described as a friendship envoy.

Two giant pandas arrived in the United States following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington, continuing the long running “panda diplomacy” tradition that uses the animals as symbols of China’s ties with other countries, according to SCMP Economy.

Zoo Atlanta said on Sunday it was welcoming Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, adding that the zoo’s previous 25-year partnership with China ended in 2024.

SCMP Economy also notes that Xi said during his US trip that the pandas would be sent as an “envoy of friendship” between the Chinese and American people.

The outlet describes how for decades China has used giant pandas as goodwill gestures in international relations, with exchanges that have often been linked to diplomatic initiatives and major trade deals.
