Arbitrum halts new Stylus activations over AI attack concerns
The Arbitrum Security Council said the pause was ordered as a precaution against AI-assisted attacks, while already active Stylus apps can continue running.
Arbitrum’s Security Council temporarily blocked new Stylus contract activations on Arbitrum One and Nova in an emergency action dated October 2, restricting programs and app updates that require fresh activation, according to CryptoSlate.
The pause does not affect already active Stylus applications, and ordinary Solidity contract deployment and execution remain unaffected, based on the Council action report.
Arbitrum attributed the precaution to increasingly sophisticated AI-assisted attacks that it said use hand crafted WebAssembly programs outside the standard Stylus compiler toolchain.
It said known Stylus bugs primarily threaten chain liveness, including denial-of-service risks, and that no attack allowing theft of user funds had been discovered, with the linked Ethereum, Arbitrum One and Nova transaction records showing successful execution on October 2 around 15:30 to 15:31 UTC.
