Cornell president says he is “deeply disturbed” by student rape allegation

Cornell University president Michael Kotlikoff said he was deeply disturbed by a student’s 2024 rape allegation, which has drawn national outrage, in a video message released on Saturday, according to SCMP Economy.

Kotlikoff said his heart ached for what the student experienced and said the university must do everything it can to prevent what happened from happening again.

SCMP Economy reports that lawyers for a student identified as Jane Doe filed a civil lawsuit last month against Cornell, its leaders, the Chi Phi fraternity, her sorority, and seven men, alleging she was given drugs and alcohol and assaulted.

The outlet also reports that while Cornell defended aspects of its handling of the cases, the president acknowledged it could do better, and that some of the accused men have denied criminal wrongdoing through statements from their lawyers.
