zkAPI on Ethereum mainnet adds an onchain exit for metered AI payments
Ethereum Foundation says zkAPI vaults can hold USDC credits, with the mainnet manifest later showing native ETH accounting, highlighting how deposit recovery depends on spending states and timely exits.
CryptoSlate reports the Ethereum Foundation’s Oct. 1 announcement that zkAPI is now running on Ethereum mainnet gives a key operational test for a Vitalik Buterin and Davide Crapis-inspired private AI payment design. zkAPI is positioned as a billing system for metered APIs, documenting an onchain withdrawal route intended to return unspent balances without requiring clearance from the billing server.
According to CryptoSlate, a user’s ability to recover funds depends on the spending state they hold and whether they can initiate an exit before timing constraints. The implementation includes pause powers and expiring notes, which the article says can limit recovery if an exit is not started in time.
CryptoSlate adds that Open Anonymity built the implementation with the Ethereum Foundation. The underlying design was published Feb. 11, the vault linked to the announcement was created Sept. 30, and the announcement describes the linked vault as holding USDC credits.
The mainnet manifest cited by CryptoSlate identifies that same vault as native ETH, with balances accounted for in whole gwei, and the explorer activity shows ETH-valued deposits.
