Brazil heads to a runoff after Flavio Bolsonaro wins first round
Flavio Bolsonaro won 47.0% of the vote on Sunday, narrowly edging Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at 45.0%, with a runoff set for Oct. 2.
Brazil will hold a presidential run-off after right-wing challenger Flavio Bolsonaro secured a surprise first-round victory that raised questions about Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s grip on power in South America’s largest economy, according to SCMP Economy.
Bolsonaro, the son of imprisoned former president Jair Bolsonaro, won 47.0% of the ballots in Sunday’s election, beating Lula, who took 45.0%.
Brazilians will vote again on Oct. 2 to decide the next president.
