British pound dips against yen as Japan signals tighter debt issuance
The yen strengthened after Japan Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae said the government will control annual debt issuance while reviewing economic and market conditions.
The British pound slid about 0.3% to around 208.40 in European trading on Monday, after a steady start near 209.10, according to FXStreet.
FXStreet said the move came as the Japanese yen gained on Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae’s comments about the government exercising tighter control over debt issuance.
FXStreet cited the prime minister saying Japan would control the annual debt issuance amount appropriately while scrutinising the economy, prices, tax revenues, interest rates, debt servicing costs, and market developments.
The outlet added that the remarks boosted the yen’s safe haven appeal in Asia Pacific trading.
