Chinese scavenger finds more than US$63,000 in pension account

A 71-year-old man in central China, surnamed Ru, discovered that his pension fund held 424,204 yuan, equivalent to more than US$63,000, after receiving a bank card linked to his pension account in late September, according to SCMP Economy.

The report says Ru had spent 21 years making ends meet by scavenging in Changde, Hunan province, and he said he had been unaware of his pension entitlements.

SCMP Economy reports Ru spoke to media after learning the balance and expressed gratitude to the social assistance authority and related government departments for support.
