Coin Metrics revises Ethereum flow data timing for research tests

The update recomputed ETH Standard Flow Metrics from the network’s first block, meaning backtests must use the data vintage available at each historical decision point.

Coin Metrics has rebuilt Ethereum’s historical Standard Flow Metrics, raising a timing problem for research that treats exchange outflows as a trading signal, according to a notice dated Oct. 1 from the crypto data provider.

The update recomputes ETH Standard Flow Metrics from Ethereum’s first block using Coin Metrics’ most up-to-date information as part of its Ethereum Point-in-Time release. It affects all ETH flow metrics at daily and hourly frequencies, with corrected history available for backfilling.

The provider cautioned that a chart downloaded today can describe past flows using knowledge acquired later, while a backtest requires the information that would have been available at the time each decision occurred. That means different information sets can map to the same observation dates, even if they reflect the same underlying timeline.

Coin Metrics did not provide any revision amounts or an ETH strategy comparison, and it said researchers may need to identify the data vintage, or the version of data used in their tests, to measure any effect on returns. It also noted that Standard metrics use all addresses currently known.
