Hong Kong drops appeal over golf course flats plan after EIA ruling
The government is not appealing a decision that found its environmental review process for the project unlawful, paving the way for a broader review of the plans.
Hong Kong has decided not to appeal a Court of Appeal ruling that found the government’s approval process for an environmental impact assessment, tied to a planned housing project on the territory’s oldest golf course, was unlawful, according to the South China Morning Post.
The dispute centered on government plans to build 12,000 public flats on the Hong Kong Golf Club site, and the government’s decision means a broader review of the project can now be undertaken in light of the appeals court judgment.
The outlet reports that an earlier Court of First Instance decision in 2024 found the EIA report preparation and approval process was marked by errors and breaches of law, and that nearly all of those findings were endorsed by the Court of Appeal.
The ruling effectively ends the specific court fight over the flawed process and avoids further attempts to have the courts uphold the original EIA approval.
