US trade deficit widens to $105.6B in August

August exports rose 1.4% to $315.2B even as imports jumped 4.3% to $420.8B, pushing the goods shortfall up $12.8B to $136.6B.

The US goods and services trade deficit widened to $105.6B in August, rising from a revised $92.8B and coming in substantially larger than expected, according to Action Forex.

The gap deteriorated despite continued export growth, with exports up 1.4% to $315.2B while imports climbed 4.3% to $420.8B.

Action Forex said the $12.7B increase in the overall deficit was concentrated in goods, where the shortfall widened by $12.8B to $136.6B, while the services surplus edged higher to $31.0B.

The composition pointed to stronger import demand rather than weaker foreign demand, with goods imports driving almost all of the monthly increase in total imports.
