Alberta to vote on independence referendum on 19 October

The ballot will offer two choices, staying in Canada or moving toward a later binding independence referendum.

Albertans are set to vote this month on whether the western Canadian province should remain in Canada or move ahead with independence, with the referendum scheduled for 19 October, the BBC Business reports.

The vote presents residents with two options, either voting to stay in Canada or voting to proceed toward a formal binding independence referendum at a later date.

Supporters argue Alberta’s oil and gas wealth and other strengths mean the province would benefit more if it kept greater shares of that value within its borders rather than sharing it with the federal government.

Opposing the push for independence, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith warns about the financial risk to the province, saying Alberta could face paying C$400 billion.
