Balyasny adds former Citadel data strategies chief to quant team
The hire, Halla Yang, joined Balyasny in Chicago after leaving Citadel in April 2025.
Balyasny Asset Management has hired Halla Yang, the former head of Citadel's data strategies group, bringing senior alternative-data expertise to its quantitative research team, according to Hedgeweek citing eFinancial Careers.
Yang joined Balyasny this month in Chicago after eight years at Citadel, where he served five years as co-head and later sole head of the data strategies group focused on alternative rather than conventional market data.
Hedgeweek reports that Citadel's data strategies work used artificial intelligence and other analytical techniques to turn complex datasets into investment signals, including satellite imagery that required substantial processing before it could be used in research.
Before joining Citadel, Yang held roles including data scientist at McKinsey, quantitative researcher at Jump Trading, and vice president at Goldman Sachs, and Hedgeweek adds that he is a Kaggle grandmaster.
