Euro slides as currency traders grow bearish on France risks
The euro fell as much as 0.7% versus the dollar to $1.1176, hitting its lowest level versus sterling since June 2025.
Hedge funds and other currency traders are increasingly positioning for further weakness in the euro amid concerns about France’s public finances and growing political uncertainty, according to a Bloomberg report.
The euro weakened to a 16-month low against sterling on Wednesday, and it also approached its weakest level in a year versus the yen as the decline extended.
On the day, the euro dropped as much as 0.7% against the dollar to $1.1176 and fell 0.4% against sterling to 84.48 pence, its lowest level since June 2025.
Bloomberg also pointed to France’s deteriorating fiscal position as a key driver of investor concern, with rising government bond yields and renewed fears of political instability weighing on the currency.
