KCC releases updated US severe convective storm catastrophe model
KCC said the Version 5.0 update adds refined methods for tornado outbreaks and improved tornado and wind intensity calculations along the Southeast coast.
Karen Clark & Company, also known as KCC, has launched a new version of its US Severe Convective Storm model, designed to improve how the firm quantifies losses from a major weather peril affecting insured property in the United States.
According to KCC, Version 5.0 includes refined techniques for severe tornado outbreaks and updated tornado and wind intensity calculations along the Southeast coast.
The company also said the model incorporates AI-informed 4D atmospheric modeling, rather than relying only on historical storm reports, to better represent the physical processes that drive hail, tornado, and straight-line wind losses.
KCC added that the update is part of its annual approach to refreshing the model as knowledge and conditions evolve, to help reinsurers stay current with advancing trends and data.
