Seoul megachurch says member data for 850,000 may be compromised

The church said the initial review found thousands of record changes, including 7,202 address updates, and it is blocking outside access while notifying members.

Yoido Full Gospel Church in Seoul said Wednesday that personal data tied to 850,000 members may have been stolen in a suspected cyberattack, with the congregation flagged by the church as having once been recognized as the world’s largest.

According to the church, its initial review identified names and dates of birth, as well as a record log showing 2,629 changes to resident registration numbers, 3,964 changes to phone numbers, and 7,202 changes to addresses.

The incident was flagged by South Korea’s internet security agency, KISA, on Tuesday afternoon, and the church said it has blocked outside access to its systems, changed server passwords, and started notifying members.

A cybersecurity firm, Oasis Security, found the data on an overseas server that also contained attack logs and account details tied to Yoido and Sarang Church, where the suspected haul is smaller, about 89,000 member records and 286 employee records, including the senior pastor’s.
