Sony plans to stop physical disc production in 2028, sparking backlash

A former PlayStation executive said the shift changes how buyers think about owning digital games, months after Sony argued in a California court that consumers do not believe they own the titles bought on the PlayStation Store.

Sony plans to stop producing physical discs for its game consoles in 2028, a move that has drawn criticism from industry figures and players, Decrypt reported.

Shawn Layden, a former PlayStation executive, questioned the decision as a “heavily spreadsheeted decision” and said it has damaged Sony's reputation. He argued it shifts the conversation from owning a game to having access to a digital asset, adding that if consumers cannot sell what they buy, they may conclude they do not truly own it.

According to Decrypt, the backlash followed Sony's July announcement, with gamers and a physical gaming advocacy group pushing for organized action, including a “Don’t Kill the Disc” petition that has gathered more than 385,000 signatures.

The report also notes the timing, saying it comes months after Sony argued in a California court that no reasonable consumer believes they own the digital games purchased in the PlayStation Store, in connection with a proposed class action lawsuit.
