US launches investigation into nine universities over J-1 visa fraud
The probe covers Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, University of Pittsburgh, UC Davis, Caltech, Arizona State University, and MIT, with subpoenas issued to the schools.
The Trump administration has launched what US Department of Labor inspector general Anthony D’Esposito called a “historic investigation” into alleged J-1 visa fraud involving nine universities, according to SCMP Economy.
At a White House press conference, D’Esposito announced the probe includes Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, the University of Pittsburgh, UC Davis, Caltech, Arizona State University, and MIT, and said subpoenas have been issued to the universities.
The investigation is focused on concerns raised by officials around Chinese scholars and the role of the Chinese government in the context of the J-1 program, which covers exchange visitors, including researchers, scholars, and students who may receive temporary authorization to work or conduct research in the US.
D’Esposito also warned that the Chinese government does not need to break into US research labs if institutions keep their doors open, while he singled out China during the remarks.
