ETH fee burns offset just 2.07% of new issuance in 2026

A supply ledger covering Jan. 1 to Oct. 9 shows gross issuance of 796,623.377 ETH, with 16,524.553 ETH burned and 1,685.919 ETH removed via consensus penalties.

Ethereum’s transaction-fee burn has covered only a small portion of new ETH created in 2026, with burned fees offsetting 2.07% of gross issuance, according to a supply ledger published Oct. 9 by CryptoSlate.

After accounting for fee burn, validator penalties, and other destruction mechanisms, the network added about 778,413 ETH over the tracked window, lifting supply by roughly 0.6%.

The piece also describes how higher gas limits could change the fee burden needed to reduce net issuance, citing a development target of a conditional 200 million maximum gas after the Glamsterdam upgrade.

Using an example finalized accounting sample, CryptoSlate estimates the execution base fee required to offset gross issuance would be about 13.85 gwei under a 60 million gas limit, versus about 4.16 gwei under a hypothetical 200 million limit, with the ledger spanning Jan. 1, 00:00:11 UTC through Oct. 9, 15:44:23 UTC.
