Hurricane Isaias forecast to reach Cat 3 before weakening

Insured-loss estimates are still expected to stay in the single-digit billions despite the storm’s projected peak intensity.

Hurricane Isaias is forecast to intensify further as it approaches the Gulf Coast, with updated expectations pointing to a major Category 3 storm before it weakens.

The forecast anticipates that wind shear will help drive weakening before landfall, which should reduce overall impacts and keep insured-loss estimates in the single-digit billions, according to Artemis.

After landfall, Isaias has moved inland and is transitioning to an extra-tropical system, with sustained winds now closer to 60 mph.

Artemis also notes the storm is bringing flash-flooding risk from rainfall, along with a threat of tornadoes and severe weather across a wide area as it moves north.
