Liberty Mutual Re makes parametric earthquake payout to Mexico

The 7.3 magnitude quake on July 17, 2026, activated Mexico’s nationwide earthquake and volcanic risk program weeks after the scheme began.

Liberty Mutual Reinsurance, part of Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, has issued a parametric insurance payout to Mexico’s federal government following a magnitude 7.3 earthquake off the country’s southern coast on July 17, 2026, according to Reinsurance News.

The payment was linked to coverage under Mexico’s nationwide earthquake and volcanic risk program, which was activated just weeks after its inception. Reinsurance News said the federal program is overseen by Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público and administered by Agroasemex, S.A.

Reinsurance News added that LM Re has served as lead capacity provider since June, and the transaction was brokered by Augment Risk and domestic broker TBS. The outlet said the policy is designed to support Mexico’s fiscal resilience and continuity of public services after natural disasters.

The payout used LM Re’s ShakeNet Parametric earthquake technology, powered by Safehub’s Shake Network and the Global Earthquake Model’s OpenQuake engine, Reinsurance News reported. It said Safehub’s sensor network is intended to reduce basis risk by reconciling predictive models with real ground motion observations.
