UK urges Interpol to reject Argentina’s red notices over Falklands oil arrests

The UK says it has sought urgent assurances from Interpol after sending a letter to its Lyon headquarters warning that Argentina’s requests are politically motivated.

The UK has asked Interpol to reject Argentina’s “red notice” requests related to arrests tied to a major oil project off the Falkland Islands, according to the Guardian Business.

The outlet reports that the UK sent a letter to Interpol’s headquarters in Lyon arguing that Argentina’s requests, which include the arrest of individuals involved in the project and British nationals, should be treated as politically motivated.

The Guardian Business adds that UK officials are seeking urgent assurances from Interpol amid heightened tensions over the sovereignty of the British overseas territory.

The report also says the UK government is concerned that the requests amount to an attempt to pressure people and companies to stop working in the Falklands.
