Bank of England governor denies Farage swayed CBDC policy
The Bank said it has not made a decision on introducing a digital pound, and any launch would require further analysis and public consultation.
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has denied that lobbying by Nigel Farage influenced the central bank’s approach to a potential central bank digital currency, according to a letter reported by The Guardian, which said policy decisions were made independently.
The report said Bailey noted that the BoE is “able to spot” attempts to influence policymaking and that no policy changes took place after a meeting with Farage, where cryptocurrencies were discussed among other topics.
Farage, a prominent Brexit supporter and Reform Party leader who resigned his parliamentary seat this week amid reports he accepted gifts connected to people tied to the crypto industry, has been critical of CBDCs and argues they would enable financial surveillance.
The Guardian also reported that the UK’s National Crime Agency is investigating alleged money laundering involving other senior Reform UK figures, as the Bank of England continues to explore a “digital pound” that remains in the design phase.
