Tennessee county expands ban on crypto mining and data centers
The 12-0 vote targets new and expanded mining facilities and data centers in unincorporated areas, following earlier action tied to the ExoticRidge project and noise limits in proposed settlement talks.
Cointelegraph reports that Hawkins County Commissioners in Tennessee voted unanimously, 12-0, to ban the establishment, construction, installation, expansion and operation of crypto mining facilities and data centers in unincorporated parts of the county.
The county passed a similar ban in September 2025 as part of efforts to prevent the ExoticRidge mining company from operating locally, and it previously affirmed its authority to do so via a January resolution.
ExoticRidge and county officials had proposed a settlement in January that would allow the facility to run with noise restrictions, limiting operations to more than 80 A-weighted decibels at the property line for no more than 30 minutes during any four-hour period.
Cointelegraph also notes that Tennessee has broadened its crypto-related rules, including a July 1 prohibition on the use and installation of cryptocurrency ATMs and kiosks under a law signed in April, citing resident complaints tied to scams.
