China issues guidelines to revive immersive brick-and-mortar retail
The move follows cooling retail sales growth in May, with weakness in big-ticket categories persisting into the prior month.
SCMP Economy reports that China’s Ministry of Commerce, along with eight other authorities, released guidelines aimed at reinvigorating physical retail stores and making them more immersive.
The effort comes as retail sales growth cooled in May to the slowest pace since December 2022, and as big-ticket items continued to weaken through last month, with e-commerce price competition pressuring bricks-and-mortar operators.
