China sentences three Myanmar crime bosses to death in fraud crackdown

The rulings from Fujian courts followed a May trial and cited cross-border telecoms fraud networks that resulted in the deaths of four Chinese nationals.

Courts in China sentenced three key figures tied to a Myanmar crime syndicate to death for running large-scale cross-border telecoms fraud networks, according to SCMP Economy.

The Quanzhou Intermediate People’s Court and the Nanan City People’s Court in southeastern Fujian province handed down the rulings on Tuesday against syndicate head Wei Huairen, his nephew Chen Dawei, and accomplice Liao Jingfang after a trial held in May.

SCMP Economy reported that the cases were linked to cyber scam centres, along with illegal detention and extortion rings operating out of northern Myanmar and targeting victims across China.

In the same set of proceedings, three other key defendants received life sentences, while 55 accomplices were given fixed prison terms ranging from 39 months to 24 years, SCMP Economy reported.
