Coinbase C-suite reshuffle as Paul Grewal exits after SEC fight
Coinbase said Paul Grewal will remain an adviser while Molly Abraham leads the legal team as general counsel.
Coinbase said Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal is leaving the company after a years-long legal fight with U.S. regulators. The exchange added that Grewal will continue as an adviser while working on trust charter efforts through the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, according to CoinDesk.
Coinbase also announced changes to senior leadership. Molly Abraham will lead the legal function as general counsel, while Ryan Van Grack will become vice chairman in a role described as more public-facing, with Coinbase also indicating the shift follows Grewal’s departure.
CoinDesk noted that Grewal’s tenure included Coinbase’s biggest legal battle with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC sued the exchange in 2023, alleging it operated as an unregistered broker, clearinghouse and exchange for securities, and Coinbase also sought court access to internal SEC documents and pushed for the agency to establish crypto rules during Grewal’s time.
Coinbase said Grewal framed his exit around the outcomes of the litigation, calling it the single greatest achievement of his six-year tenure in a company statement carried by CoinDesk. Grewal’s statement also argued that legal wins helped ensure crypto had a future in the U.S. and could grow.
