Coinbase chief legal officer Paul Grewal to move into advisory role
Grewal will exit his chief legal officer role on July 31, while Coinbase names Molly Abraham as general counsel and Ryan VanGrack as vice chair.
Coinbase chief legal officer Paul Grewal will transition into an advisory role at the exchange starting July 31, according to Cointelegraph. Grewal said the move’s specifics were not yet finalized, but he will continue working with the board of Coinbase National Trust Company.
Cointelegraph reports that Coinbase’s legal leadership will shift around Grewal’s departure. The company plans for legal vice presidents Molly Abraham and Ryan VanGrack to step into new roles as general counsel and vice chair, respectively.
Grewal has served as chief legal officer since 2020 and previously led the exchange’s legal team through the US Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement action in 2023, which alleged Coinbase operated as an unregistered securities exchange, broker, and clearing agency. That lawsuit was later dismissed under the Trump administration.
Cointelegraph also notes that Grewal’s work has occurred as Coinbase strengthened relationships with lawmakers and the White House that favor crypto policy. The article says Coinbase is a top contributor to the Fairshake political action committee and that Coinbase executives have pushed Congress to pass the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which is expected to shift oversight from the SEC toward the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
