Pakistan issues tender for emergency LNG after Qatar cargo cancellation

The LNG is for July 15 to 16 delivery, after tensions in the Strait of Hormuz led to the cancellation of a Qatar shipment.

Pakistan has turned to the spot LNG market again, issuing a tender to buy an LNG cargo for July 15 to 16 delivery after a Qatar cargo was canceled, Bloomberg reported.

The decision came after renewed hostilities that disrupted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, where traffic had already been halted following US and Iranian strikes over consecutive days, with Iran targeting Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait.

Pakistan has historically relied on Qatar for nearly all of its LNG under long term fixed deals, but procurement has been constrained since operations around the Strait of Hormuz were disrupted after the Iran war began on February 28.

According to the report, the emergency tender is part of a broader shift back to spot purchases, after Pakistan bought its second spot LNG cargo in as many weeks and earlier disruptions contributed to a gas supply and power crisis in March and April.
