US launches new strikes on Iran as region-wide attacks flare

Iran says the US strikes killed at least 14 people and wounded 78, as attacks also hit targets in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.

The United States launched new air strikes against Iran early Thursday, and Tehran retaliated by targeting Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar, amid renewed warnings that the fighting could derail an interim deal aimed at ending the war in the Persian Gulf, according to the South China Morning Post citing the Associated Press.

Sirens sounded at least three times in Bahrain, home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters, while missiles targeted Kuwait and Qatar. Explosions were also reported in Iran, and an Iranian official accused the US of striking an area around Iran’s sole nuclear power plant later Thursday, the outlet said.

The escalation came hours after US President Donald Trump said recent Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz signaled the end of a fragile ceasefire. The US struck a range of military sites and port facilities early Wednesday after Iran targeted several merchant vessels off the coast of Oman, the report added.

In Iran, the outlet said Iran’s Health Ministry reported that two days of American air strikes killed at least 14 people and wounded 78, in the first overall tally of casualties. It also said sirens sounded Thursday afternoon in Jordan, where the US has stationed troops and aircraft.
