Chinese companies push “world models” to simulate real and virtual change

The technology is still early, with no shared view on what a full world model should look like as big tech expands the effort.

Artificial intelligence is shifting from generating text, images and video toward “world models,” systems designed to simulate how the physical or digital world changes over time, according to SCMP Economy.

The outlet says the term originally tied to physics simulations and robotics, but more Chinese companies are applying the concept more broadly even as the approach remains in its infancy.

SCMP Economy notes there is little consensus on what a world model should ultimately look like, even as the technology has become a widely used buzzword.

The article also points to major tech companies entering the space, signaling that world models are becoming a central focus of the broader AI race.
