FCC import ban on advanced robotic devices could hit smart vacuums

The FCC’s restrictions cover some consumer robots, including robotic vacuum cleaners, and weigh more than 2 kg, potentially affecting models from major Chinese brands such as Roborock and Ecovacs.

The FCC added foreign-produced “advanced robotic devices” to its so-called Covered List, a move that blocks new models from obtaining US equipment authorization and is expected to disrupt consumer robots sold in the United States, according to the SCMP Economy.

While much of the initial attention focused on humanoids and other locomotion-capable robots, the ban also broadly covers devices capable of locomotion, obstacle navigation and certain network connectivity, including docking stations. The scope appears to extend to home equipment such as robotic vacuum cleaners, lawnmowers, window cleaners and pool scrubbers.

SCMP Economy reports that a US agency official confirmed to The Verge that the restrictions apply to smart vacuums, though the FCC did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the scope outside work hours.

The policy targets Chinese manufacturers that dominate the home automation market, with Roborock, Ecovacs, Dreame, Xiaomi and Narwal Robotics together accounting for 68.0 percent of the global robotic vacuum cleaner market in 2025, IDC data cited by SCMP Economy show. Global shipments rose 17.0 percent year on year to 24.1 million units last year.
