Democrats seek Senate hearings over Trump’s $1.2B crypto income

The senators, led by Elizabeth Warren and others, cited potential conflicts of interest and foreign influence, and pointed to a UAE purchase of a 49% stake in World Liberty Financial.

Democrats who lead several Senate committees have asked for hearings into President Donald Trump’s crypto holdings after a new round of financial disclosures showed he earned more than $1.2 billion in crypto-related income last year, according to Decrypt.

The letter from five Democratic senators, Elizabeth Warren, Richard Blumenthal, Gary Peters, Dick Durbin, and Ron Wyden, argues the disclosures raise concerns about conflicts of interest, foreign influence, and Trump’s role in shaping crypto policy while profiting from the industry.

The lawmakers specifically flagged that unknown “third-parties” own a stake in Trump’s family crypto company, World Liberty Financial, including mention that UAE royals bought a 49% stake in the firm last year. They also criticized administration actions they say would exempt cryptocurrencies and crypto service providers from existing financial services regulations and weaken enforcement efforts, including by disbanding the Department of Justice’s National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team.

The push for hearings is tied to the status of the Clarity Act, a bill the Trump administration is urging Congress to pass that would formally legalize most crypto activity in the United States. Decrypt reports the legislation has stalled over disagreements including ethics provisions that target the president’s ability to issue and endorse digital assets while in office.
