Lummis renews push for crypto Clarity Act ahead of August recess

The bill had passed the House last year, but it has stalled for much of 2026 amid concerns including stablecoin yield and Democratic objections to the current version.

Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis, dubbed the “Bitcoin Senator,” renewed criticism of Democrats for delaying the long-awaited crypto Clarity Act, saying the bill could have been passed months ago but is being held up.

Speaking on the Crypto in America podcast Thursday, Lummis said lawmakers are aiming to move the legislation before Congress departs for the August recess. She pointed to ongoing uncertainty among Democrats about whether they will commit to voting for the current version.

Lummis also said the bill’s length has grown over time, adding that it was about 300 pages when bipartisan work started last Labor Day and has since grown closer to 700 pages, with many added sections attributed to requests from Democrats.

According to Bitcoin Magazine, while the Clarity Act was passed in the House last year with strong bipartisan support, it has been deadlocked much of 2026. The outlet cited concerns raised by the banking lobby, including issues related to stablecoin yield, and said an updated version introduced last week addressed ethics concerns by banning government officials and their families from issuing or promoting crypto.
