Democrats urge Senate hearings over Trump crypto holdings and national security
The request cites Trump’s 2025 financial disclosure, including reported crypto-related earnings of about $1.4 billion, as the Senate considers a digital asset market structure bill expected to be voted on this month.
Cointelegraph reports that five Senate Democrats have called for committee hearings to investigate potential national security implications tied to President Donald Trump’s cryptocurrency holdings, as lawmakers weigh digital asset market structure legislation.
In a Friday notice, the Democrats asked colleagues to examine Trump’s 2025 financial disclosure, which they say includes reported earnings of about $1.4 billion connected to crypto ventures, including his memecoin and the World Liberty Financial platform.
The lawmakers said the disclosure heightens concerns that Trump could push for crypto legislation that favors the industry he is invested in, pointing to the Digital Asset Market Clarity, or CLARITY, Act that the Senate is expected to vote on this month.
Cointelegraph also notes that Democrats, as the minority in both chambers, would likely need Republican support to secure hearings and advance related legislation, and it highlights that advancing a bill in the Senate would require 60 votes to overcome a filibuster.
